Sagres One of the most popular beer companies in Portugal is arguably Sagres. It is also the second oldest company, having been established in 1934. The pale lager is the most common type but Sagres also produces a Preta (a dark ale), Bohemia (which is auburn), Radler (the pale ale with an extra fruity kick), along with occasional specials.

Sagres, along with Super Bock are the two big beer brands in Portugal Ordering Beer in Portugal. To order a standard 300 ml draught in a Portuguese bar, restaurant or cafe ask for um imperial or uma caneca for a 500 ml glass. A bottle of beer is uma garrafa.. The Silves Beer Festival used to be held annually in July at the Fábrica do Inglés until the facility closed.

This allowed two companies, Unicer - Bebidas de Portugal, S.A which produces Super Bock and Sociedade Central de Cervejas, S.A which produces Sagres, to own the entire Portuguese market with no real competition. The industry was nationalised after the 1974 Revolution and, in theory, the Portuguese beer market was open for business.
