The fifth US Navy ship to bear the name, the INDEPENDENCE was commissioned as attack aircraft carrier CVA 62 and redesignated as multi-purpose aircraft carrier CV 62 on February 28, 1973. USS INDEPENDENCE was last homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, and is now laid-up at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility at Bremerton, Wash.
