This gives the keys a pivot point and reduces the amount of force needed to press each button. I do like the idea of riffing/hacking on the pocket chip design or using input options that are right there. Making your own controller is definitely possible. I wouldn't expect commercial options at least until the $9 CHIP excitement dies down (there have been raspberry pi-boy DIY projects for years).
