Nowy wariant czołgu został nazwany KW-1 M1942 (KW-1C). Był on bardzo dobrze opancerzony, ale jeszcze bardziej powolny i trudniejszy do manewrowania niż jego poprzednik. Następna wersja, KW-1S była znacznie szybsza.
