Step 1. Crack the cardamom seeds and nutmeg with a heavy skillet on a cutting board. Toss them into a saucepan with the rest of the ingredients including the water. Bring to a boil. (And no, I won't be posting my secret recipe here.) It's a honey-based liqueur that is popular in eastern Europe, especially in countries like Lithuania.

Directions. Combine honey, water, cloves, cinnamon, vanilla bean, lemon peel, cardamom, allspice and ginger in a medium pot over medium heat. Heat just until steaming, but do not bring to a simmer. Krupnikas was created in 1593 by Benedictine Monks in the abbey of Niaśviž. It quickly became popular among the Lithuanian and Polish nobility. At the time, the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth was one of the largest powers in Europe, and despite the Soviet occupation of Lithuania, the drink survived as a traditional stovetop recipe.

Pour honey into a large pot and bring to a boil over medium heat. Skim off any foam from the top. Stir in strained liquid and vanilla. Remove from heat and place far from the stove to avoid flare-ups when adding grain alcohol. Slowly stir in grain alcohol. Place the pot back onto the burner over low heat and cover.

Gather the ingredients. In a large saucepan, combine 2 tablespoons cold water and the sugar and heat until it dissolves. Add boiling water, vanilla bean, nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon stick, peppercorns, and allspice. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce heat, and simmer 5 minutes.

In a large saucepan, heat the water over medium heat. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, dried orange peel, and dried lemon peel to the saucepan. Bring the water to a boil and let it simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the spices to infuse. After 10 minutes, remove the saucepan from heat and strain out the spices.

The basic recipe for krupnikas was supposedly invented in the 16th century by the Benedictine monks of a monastery in what is now Belarus. It may have originally been their affordable, home-brewed.
