A fire damaged the wooden roofing in 1124. The cathedral was repaired and enlarged by Alexander, but it was significantly damaged by an earthquake 40 years later, in 1185. This earthquake was among the most powerful ever felt in the United Kingdom, with a magnitude of more than five.
