Alexandrine, known within the family as 'Fanfan', was to be their only surviving child and was born three years into their marriage on the 10th of August 1744, probably at the Hôtel de Gesvres. Although her birth seems to have been straightforward enough, things took a peculiarly disastrous turn when news came in of the young king Louis XV.

Alexandrine's father was Charle-Guillaume Le Normant d'Etiolles, whom Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson (1721-1764), the future Madame de Pompadour, maîtresse en titre of Louis XV, married in 1741 and from whom she was separated in 1745.
