Prepare for the mud. The west coast of Vancouver Island can be a very wet place. Prepare for mud on the Juan de Fuca if it's just rained a lot, the mud puddles can be big enough to swallow hiking boots whole. Gaiters and hiking poles are great defences against the thick mud.
