Russian artist Nikolai Dmitriev-Orenburgsky was born in Nizhny Novgorod in 1837 and was known for his detailed and realistic paintings. Orenburgsky was a student at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg but decided to leave in 1863 along with 13 other students to create an independent society for art, the Petersburg Cooperative of Artists.
