TAKING Ford into the heavy category for the first time, the Transcontinental was introduced earlier this year. Spanning the 34 to 42 tonnes (33.5 to 41.3 tons) categories, the truck range uses cabs from Berliet, engines from Cummins, gearboxes from Fuller and axles from Rockwell—all assembled at the Ford factory in Amsterdam.

When launched in 1975, Ford's Transcontinental seemed to have everything going for it. Eight years later it was dropped. The reasons for its failure make an interesting tale. • "Built stronger to last longer", Ford's Transcontinental haulage chassis was launched in the middle of 1975.

That's the Transcontinental, introduced in 1975, in a nutshell. The 4435 tractor I found was the top model, it's powered by a Cummins NTE370 "Big Cam" engine, good for 352 DIN-hp @ 2,100 rpm. An inline-6 with 14 liter displacement, turbocharged and intercooled. The works. Here's the 13-speed Eaton-Fuller RTO9513 transmission.

The Transcontinental was introduced in 1975. It was heavy-duty, powerful and for the era, the ride was very comfortable. The drivers really loved it; the whole package was simply ahead of its time. The cab was suspended on four coil springs with hydraulic dampers and an anti-roll bar at the front of the cab.

At the time of the Transcontinental's market launch, interest was so great that Ford had received 400 pre-orders for the all-new truck. During its first (incomplete) year from April thru December, Ford produced 934 Transcontinentals.

The Transcontinental is an extremely well thought-out piece of engineering—all the more creditable as it is Ford's first attempt at the heavy end of the European market. In terms of driver comfort it almost goes too far with its soft ride, but this is a matter of individual driver opinion.
