This time I'll be looking at a somewhat more uncommon and unique piece of equipment, the Epson R-D1/R-D1s. This mostly forgotten about camera was actually somewhat ground breaking in 2004 as it was the first digital rangefinder, releasing about 2 and a half years prior to the Leica M8. The R-D1s was the second model, the first being the R-D1.

The Epson R-D1, based on the Voigtländer Bessa, is the first (2004) digital rangefinder camera ever made.The body is made from magnesium alloy, it uses an EM mount which accepts Leica M lenses (bayonet mount) and, through the use of an adapter, L (screw mount) lenses.A unique design choice is a shutter charge lever.This resembles a typical film advance crank and is used to cock the camera.

Low capacity The Epson R-D1 allows a maximum SD card capacity of 2Gb - which is fair enough for a 2004 digital camera. It's about 100 RAW+jpeg pictures… not as little as 36 exposures, but sill, the fact that it's only 2Gb makes me shoot thrifty. It makes me wait for the right moment before shooting.

R-D1 was jointly developed by Seiko Epson and Cosina and manufactured by the latter, which also builds the current Voigtländer cameras. It uses Leica M-mount lenses or earlier Leica screw mount lenses with an adapter. An unusual feature to note on the R-D1 is that it is a digital camera that has a manually wound shutter with a rapid wind lever.
