The flags of British North America used in colonial Canada showcased ties to the British Empire. Both before and after Confederation in 1867, Canada used the United Kingdom's Royal Union Flag, commonly known as the Union Jack. The Royal Union Flag was used across British North America and in Canada even after Confederation (1867) until 1965.

The flag of a British-dominated North America seemed like a bit of an obvious one. The first American Navy flag was very similar, probably because it was easy to convert the British Red ensign by sowing stripes on. That flag was known as the Grand Union Flag.
