This EAL/D learning progression describes a progression of English language learning typical of students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D). It has developed primarily for teachers who are not EAL/D specialists.

What is the EAL/D Learning Progression? ESL A guide to EAL/D Learning Progression

As part of this commitment, ACARA developed the English as an Additional Language or Dialect Teacher Resource to support teachers as they develop teaching and learning programs in the Australian Curriculum: Foundation to Year 10 with students for whom English is an additional language or dialect (EAL/D).

EAL/D

EAL/D learners are plurilingual. EAL/D students come to school with a complex set of language skills for learning, and English is a developing part of this repertoire (Busch, 2012). Their knowledge of their multiple languages is interconnected and integrated, even if they have different degrees of proficiency and literacy in Standard Australian.

EAL/D

EAL/D students are those whose first language is a language or dialect other than English and who require additional support to develop proficiency in Standard Australian English (SAE). These students may include: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students immigrants to Australia and temporary visa holders from non-English speaking countries

They describe six levels of language development in each of the four macro skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The EQ Bandscales for EAL/D learners are presented for two phases of learning: early phase for learners from Prep to Year 3. middle phase for learners from year 4 to 10. Bandscale levels are not linked to school years.
